A tongue-in-cheek fundraising event for homeless cats and dogs will soon lock up Riverside residents until enough money is raised to spring them from a kennel.
The Saturday, June 30, event will be staged by the Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center, which takes in healthy and adoptable cats and dogs with the goal of finding them good, loving homes.
No healthy, adoptable animal is ever destroyed there, but the center — founded as the Riverside Humane Society in 1897 — can only admit as many relinquished pets as there is space.

February 19, 2015 (Riverside, CA) -After canine distemper tests came back positive on several of our resident dogs The Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center has temporarily halted dog adoptions and intakes.
After consulting with our veterinarian the dogs that tested positive were humanely euthanized to prevent the disease from spreading. Center staff is committed and focused on preventing widespread infection within the canine community. Those preventative measures include cleaning, and disinfecting, disposing of items such as towels, blankets and toys that may have been contaminated.
The tests were conducted by a local veterinarian and Center staff is working closely with him to create a protocol for all dogs that show signs of the disease.
Puppies and unvaccinated dogs of any age are the most susceptible to distemper. The virus can be passed from dog to dog through sneezing, coughing, sharing food and water bowls. Early signs of canine distemper include sneezing, coughing, and discharge from the eyes and nose. Depression and/or loss of appetite are also symptoms.
There is no way to track exactly how the virus entered the Center, however we believe that it came from an unvaccinated dog that was transferred from a local animal control agency.
The Distemper vaccine is extremely effective in protecting dogs from this fatal disease. Please make sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations. We recommend that owners visit your veterinarian to ensure that your dog is has received all of the proper vaccinations, (this includes their pediatric series as well as all distemper booster immunizations).
Cats and dogs cannot pass the disease to one another. Cat adoptions and intakes will continue at the Pet Adoption Center.
For more information on prevention of distemper, visit the ASPCA web page: http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/dog-care/distemper.
