Does your cat like to go on the bedroom carpet, or the tiled kitchen floor, or the hardwood floor in the dining room? Does he go right next to the litter box, but not in it? All cats will have a favorite place to eliminate. The trick is getting him to think of his litter box as his favorite place. Location of the litter box, the type of litter in the box, and the cleanliness of the litter box all play a role in your cat’s choice to use the litter box or not.

Sometimes cats will start going outside the litter box because of a medical condition, like a urinary track infection. So, the first step in helping your cat to learn to use the litter box is to see a veterinarian.
