It is a natural response for all animals to be fearful of some objects or situations. An animal’s sense of fear helps him determine that he is in danger. For a dog, his sense of fear will provoke him to protect himself by either running away, hiding or fighting back. But a dog that seems excessively fearful, such as a dog who barks, bites, tries to escape, urinates, or hides at relatively benign objects or environments, is a dog who really needs help. Generally, an unusually fearful dog will not overcome his fearfulness on his own, especially if he is continually exposed to the item, person, or situation that is causing the fear.
